Chengazhikodan Nendran Banana, also known as Chengazhikode Banana, is the most popular traditional fruit cultivated in the Thrissur district, Kerala. This variety of bananas is known for its characteristic quality, bunch shape, and fruit color. The beautiful bunches of Chengali Kodan are used as offerings in temples, especially in the Guruvayur Temple. During festival seasons like Onam, Changalikodan is in high demand because it is frequently offered as 'Kazhchakula' to the presiding deity at various temples across the state, including Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple.‘Changalikodan’ Nendran Banana, is the state's most popular and traditional tasty Nendran cultivation. The Changalikodan variety is distinct from other Nendran varieties in that the hands of the Kazhchakula bear 40 to 50 golden yellow colored fruits if well cared for, and 7 to 10 hands are seen in a cyclic arrangement. Farmers cultivating the unique variety of bananas in northern Thrissur have a tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation.
Although the Chengalikodan banana is cultivated in all the panchayats in the Vadakanchery block of Thalappilli taluk of Thrissur district, the appearance and taste of Chengalikodan banana in Erumapetty gram panchayat has brought Chengalikodan banana to the first place.
During the reign of princely states in Kerala, Chengalikodan Bananas was taken to as a special spectacle for the “Murajapam” which was held every twelve years at the Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram.
Banana bunches are wrapped with dry banana leaves after 20-25 days to get symptomatic bunches. Rolling dry banana leaves between the leaves and fruits and adjusting the distance between them gives a nice golden color to the bunches and a red color to the edges.
Kerala’s sumptuous Nendran Banana got the geographical indication tag on 1st April 2015.

ചെങ്ങാലിക്കോടന്റെ കുലകൊമ്പൻ ചന്തം
Thrissurആനക്കൊമ്പു പോലെ വളഞ്ഞങ്ങനെ ചന്തത്തിൽ നേന്ത്രപ്പഴം. വാഴക്കൂമ്പ് ഉൾപ്പെടെ നേന്ത്രക്കുല തൂക്കിയിട്ടാൽ ആന തുമ്പിക്കൈ ആട്ടി നിൽക്കും പോലെ. അതാണ് ആന പ്രിയരായ തൃശൂർക്കാരുടെ ചെങ്ങാലിക്കോടൻ നേന്ത്രൻ. ജിഐ ടാഗും കിട്ടിയതോടെ ചെങ്ങാലിക്കോടന്റെ പത്രാസ് ഉയർന്നു. ഇപ്പോൾ വിഐപികൾക്ക് സമ്മാനമായി ഈ നേന്ത്രക്കുലകൾ ദൂരദേശങ്ങളിലേക്കു പോകുന്നു.
കേരളത്തിലാദ്യമായി ഭൗമസൂചികാ പദവി ലഭിച്ച വാഴയിനമായ ചെങ്ങോലിക്കോടൻ തൃശൂർ ജില്ലയിൽ ചെങ്ങഴിനാട്, ചൂണ്ടൽ, പുത്തൂർ, പേരാമംഗലം, വേലൂർ, എരുമപ്പെട്ടി, മനക്കൊടി എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലാണ് പ്രധാനമായും കൃഷി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. കിലോയ്ക്ക് നൂറ് രൂപയുള്ള ചെങ്ങാലിക്കോടന് ഓണനാളുകളിൽ വില നൂറ്റിയിരുപത് കടക്കാറുണ്ട്. ആഗ്രഹിച്ച കുല തന്നെ കിട്ടാൻ വേണ്ടി മോഹവില നൽകുന്നവരും കുറവല്ല. ലക്ഷണമൊത്തെ നേന്ത്രക്കുലയ്ക്ക് 5000 രൂപ വരെ വില കിട്ടുന്ന അവസ്ഥയുമുണ്ട്.
ചെങ്ങഴി നമ്പ്യാരായിരുന്നു പണ്ട് തലപ്പിള്ളി രാജവംശത്തിലെ നാടുവാഴികൾ. പഴയ കൊച്ചിയിലെ ചെങ്ങഴിക്കോടായിരുന്നു ഇവരുടെ ആസ്ഥാനം. അക്കാലത്ത് തിരുവിതാംകൂറിലെ ശ്രീപദ്മനാഭ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ മുറജപത്തിനായി കൊണ്ടുപോകുന്നതിനായി ചെങ്ങഴിക്കോടു പ്രദേശത്ത് പ്രത്യേകമായി നേന്ത്രവാഴകൾ നട്ടുവളർത്തിയിരുന്നു. വലിപ്പത്തിലും നിറത്തിലും സ്വാദിലും തനത് സ്വഭാവം പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ച ഈ വാഴയാണ് ചെങ്ങഴിക്കോടൻ നേന്ത്രവാഴ എന്നപേരിൽ അറിയപ്പെട്ടത്.
നിറവും വലിപ്പവും പൊലിമയുമെല്ലാം ഒത്തു ചേരുന്നുവെന്നതാണ് ചെങ്ങാലിക്കോടന്റെ പ്രത്യേകത. പഴത്തിനു തേനൊഴുകും രുചി, തൊലിക്ക് കട്ടി കുറവ്, മൃദുവായതിനാൽ പുഴുങ്ങി കഴിക്കാൻ കേമം. കുല കണ്ടാലോ നല്ല ഭംഗി. മധുരത്തിലും രുചിയിലും ചെങ്ങാലിക്കോടനെ വെല്ലാനാകില്ല. സവിശേഷമായ ചില പരിചരണമുറകളാണ് ചെങ്ങാലിക്കോടൻ കുലകൾക്ക് സ്വർണനിറം നൽകുന്നത്.
കേരളത്തിൽ ഗുരുവായൂർ അടക്കമുള്ള ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിലേക്ക് കാഴ്ചക്കുലയായി സമർപ്പിക്കുന്നതിലേറെയും ചെങ്ങാലിക്കോടൻ തന്നെയാണ്. വിവാഹശേഷമുള്ള ആദ്യ ഓണത്തിന് ചെറുക്കൻ വീട്ടിലേക്ക് ഈ നേന്ത്രക്കുല കൊടുത്തു വിടുന്ന പതിവും ഈ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ ഉണ്ട്.
ഭൗമസൂചികാപ്പട്ടികയിൽ ഇടംപിടിച്ചതിലൂടെ ആഗോളാധികാരം, പ്രശസ്തി എന്നിവ ലഭിച്ചതോടെ വ്യാപാരമേഖലയുടെ വ്യാപ്തിയും വർദ്ധിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഇതിലൂടെ പ്രദേശത്തിന്റെ പെരുമയോടൊപ്പം സാമ്പത്തിക മുന്നേറ്റവും സാധ്യമാകുന്നു. പരമപ്രധാനമായ പാരമ്പര്യം കണ്ണിയറ്റുപോകാതെ കാക്കുവാനും കഴിയുന്നു .
