These trees grow up to about 50 metres in height. It grows abundantly in the deciduous forests of the Nilambur region. It is also known as Malabar teak and is famous for its annual rings and scent. The reason for choosing this type of construction is because the wood of Nilambur teak is resistant to fungus and pests like termites. And wood is rich in antioxidants. So, it is suitable for manufacturing purposes. This tree has the ability to withstand the humid tropical climate and is not affected by changes in humidity or temperature.
Nilambur teak is used to enhance the elegance of the interior of Rolls Royce cars, the world-class luxury car manufacturer. It is also used in the Mecca Masjid in Saudi Arabia and Buckingham Palace in London. As a wood that lends itself to the artist's handiwork, Nilambur teak is also a favourite among manufacturers.
Nilambur teak has now been given the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag by the Geographical Indication (GI) Registry and Intellectual Property India.

നിലമ്പൂർ തേക്ക്
Malappuramനിലമ്പൂരിന്റെ പേരും പെരുമയും തുടങ്ങുന്നത് തന്നെ തലയെടുപ്പോടെ നില്‍ക്കുന്ന തേക്കിന് കാടുകളില്‍ നിന്നാണ്. ലോകത്തിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ നട്ടുവളര്‍ത്തിയ തേക്കുതോട്ടമായ കനോലീസ് പ്ലോട്ട് മുതലിങ്ങോട്ട് ഏക്കറുകളോളം പരന്നു കിടക്കുന്നതാണ് നിലമ്പൂരിലെ തേക്കിന്തോട്ടം.
1840-ല്‍ ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാരാണ് ലോകത്തു തന്നെ ആദ്യമായി ശാസ്ത്രീയമായി നിലമ്പൂരില്‍ കനോലി പ്ലോട്ട് എന്ന പേരില്‍ തേക്ക് പ്ലാന്റേഷന് ആരംഭിച്ചത്. ഹെന്ട്രി വാലന്റൈന്‍ കനോലി എന്ന ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാരനായ മലബാര്‍ കളക്ടറുടെ ദീര്‍ഘവീക്ഷണത്തോടുകൂടിയുള്ള പ്രവര്‍ത്തനമാണ് നിലമ്പൂരിന് തേക്കിന്റെ നാടെന്ന വിളിപ്പേര് ചാര്‍ത്തി നല്കിയത്.1842-ലാണ് അദ്ദേഹം ഇതിനായുള്ള പരിശ്രമങ്ങള്‍ ആരംഭിക്കുന്നത്. തദ്ദേശീയനായ ചാത്തുമേനോന്‍ എന്ന ചീഫ് കണ്‍സര്‍വേറ്ററായിരുന്നു ഈ തേക്കു പ്ലാന്റേഷന് മേല്‍നോട്ടം വഹിച്ചിരുന്നത്.
തേക്കിന്റെ ചരിത്രപരമായ അടയാളങ്ങൾ സംരക്ഷിക്കുവാനായി കേരള ഫോറസ്റ്റ് റിസർച്ച് ഇൻസ്റ്റിട്ട്യൂട്ടിന് കീഴിൽ 1995 ൽ തേക്ക് മ്യൂസിയം ആരംഭിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും ആദ്യത്തെ തേക്ക് മ്യൂസിയമാണ് നിലമ്പൂർ തേക്ക് മ്യൂസിയം കോഴിക്കോട്ടെ കാപ്പാട് കടപ്പുറത്ത് കപ്പലിറങ്ങിയ പോര്ച്ചുഗീസ് നാവികന് വാസ്കോഡ ഗാമ തിരിച്ചു പോകാനുള്ള കപ്പലിന്റെ കൊടിമരം നിര്‍മ്മിച്ചത്‌ നിലമ്പൂര്‍ തേക്കുപയോഗിച്ചാണെന്നത് ശ്രദ്ധേയമാണ്. വാസ്കോഡ ഗാമയ്ക്ക് തേക്ക് നല്കിയതിന്റെ രേഖ ഇന്നും നിലമ്പൂര്‍ കോവിലകത്ത് ഭദ്രമായി സൂക്ഷിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
ബ്രിട്ടനില്‍ ബക്കിംഗ് ഹാം കൊട്ടാരത്തിന് മോടി പിടിപ്പിച്ചതും ബ്രിട്ടന് മ്യൂസിയത്തില് സൂക്ഷിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന 150 വര്‍ഷം പഴക്കമുള്ള ടിങ്കോമാലി എന്ന യുദ്ധ കപ്പല്‍ നിര്‍മ്മിച്ചതും നിലമ്പൂര്‍ തേക്ക് ഉപയോഗിച്ചാണ്. എന്തിനേറെ, ആഢംബര കാറുകളുടെ രാജാവായ ബ്രിട്ടനിലെ റോള്സ് റോയിസിന്റെ ഉള്‍വശം രാജകീയമാക്കാന്‍ വരെ നിലമ്പൂര്‍ തേക്ക് ആണ് ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത്.
ഏകദേശം 50 മീറ്റര്വരെ ഉയരത്തില്‍ വളരുന്നവയാണ് നിലമ്പൂര്‍ തേക്കിന് തോട്ടത്തിലെ മരങ്ങള്‍. 425 സെന്റീമീറ്റര് വണ്ണമുള്ള ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ തേക്ക് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നതും ഇവിടെയാണ്. ഒരു തലമുറയുടെ അശ്രാന്ത പരിശ്രമമാണ് ഈ തേക്ക് തോട്ടങ്ങള്‍ക്ക്‌ ജീവന്‍ നല്കിയത്.
ലോകത്തിലാദ്യമായി വനവൃക്ഷത്തിന് ഭൗമസൂചിക പദവി ലഭിക്കുന്നത് നിലമ്പൂർ തേക്കിനാണ്. തേക്ക് മരങ്ങളെ പരിപാലിക്കാനും അവക്ക് വിപണി കണ്ടെത്താനുമായി 2014ൽ ആരംഭിച്ച നിലമ്പൂര്‍ തേക്ക് ഹെറിറ്റേജ് സൊസൈറ്റി (NTHS) യാണ് 2014ൽ നിലമ്പൂർ തേക്കിനെ ഭൗമസൂചിക പദവിയിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതിനുള്ള പദ്ധതികൾ ആവിഷ്കരിച്ചത്. 2014 ൽ അപേക്ഷ സമർപ്പിക്കുകയും 2017 ൽ നിലമ്പൂർ തേക്ക് ഭൗമസൂചിക പട്ടികയിൽ ഇടം പിടിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
