Wayanad Jeerakasala Rice

Wayanad Jeerakasala Rice

Wayanad

The name Wayanad is believed to be derived from the word "vayalnad," meaning "land of paddy fields." The climate and
topography of Wayanad are suitable for paddy cultivation, and the hill area is suitable for the cultivation of traditional varieties like Gandakashala, Jeerakasala, Mullan Channa, Poothadi Kaima, etc.

Jeerakasala is a popular traditional rice crop of the Wayanad district. The specialty of the rice is characterised by its aroma. The grains of this rice are medium in size and slightly elongated in shape. It has a golden yellow colour and a thin awn. It differs from Basmati rice due to growth, areas of cultivation, physico-chemical properties of grains, and grain shape. The botanical name of the rice plant is "Oryza sativa."

The aromatic rice, like Jeerakashala, is grown in the highland areas of Wayanad, especially at an altitude of 750 meters. An
elevated location with good sunlight is essential for the cultivation of this type of paddy. This type of rice takes 150–180 days to reach full maturity and be harvested. Having thin stems, Jeerakasala rice has long, short, densely packed panicles. It is a long, slender grain about the size of a cumin seed and is very aromatic. The tip of the paddy is white in color. This rice, distinguished by its aroma, appearance, and quality, has now been awarded the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag by the Geographical Indication (GI) Registry.
